Carlos Matias:
Biography:
Carlos Matias began his martial arts journey when he was 15 years old. He just started learning karate from books borrowed from his high school library. Then Carlos came across a Bruce Lee fighting method book that would change his life forever. It was nothing like he's seen before. He was so excited about what he just learned, he started teaching it to his fellow school mates. He then enrolled at Cocoon Athletics to formally learn Jeet Kune Do. There, he also learned Kali, Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu.
He told his parents about his dream of opening a martial arts school,
they told Carlos he needed to get a black belt in order to open one. So he searched for a karate school to get his black belt. The school he found was Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu School. It was one of the best decisions he made in his life. It was nothing like he experienced before, students and teachers treated each other like their own family. But what impressed Carlos the most was the life lessons his Sensei taught him. All, if not most students, became better a better person, inside and outside of the dojo. But his quest for black belt was delayed because he was about to have a baby. Putting his family first, he stopped practicing martial arts for almost 4 years. But martial arts was always on Carlos' head but never had the chance or the time to practice because of family obligation. But after reading Jack Canfield's "Success Principle" book, he realized he is making his family as an excuse to not practice martial arts. He immediately took action by signing up for a instructor course in Commando Krav Maga in Vancouver. With persistence and hard work, he passed the 4 day course and became a Level 2 Instructor. He currently works at West Vancouver Martial Arts as a Karate Assistant Instructor and Self Defense teacher for teens. The quote they memorize in his karate school before the start their kata always stuck with him through his trials. " I will persist untill I succeed, I was not delivered in this world in defeat ". The best is yet to come.
