Duane Yoshito Walden has been teaching martial arts since 1986. The instructor that has had the most profound influence on his teaching and life is Paul Vunak, the president of Progressive Fighting Systems. He received his Phase One Instructor Certification in Jeet Kune Do Concepts and the Filipino Martial Arts from Sifu Paul in June of 1995.

He was stationed in Virginia while in the U.S. Navy and received a Blue Belt in BJJ (2001) and a Full Instructorship in JKD Concepts/Kali (2002) from the late Chris Anderson of Universal Fighting Systems (UFS). Duane also trained in Combat Sambo and Muay Thai Boxing in the UFS system for 4 years. While stationed onboard the USS Stump DD 978, he taught the VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, and Seize) teams self-defense in the Persian Gulf in 2001.

In April 2006 he became a Certified Executive Instructor for the new Executive PFS (DOM) program as taught by Paul Vunak. In March of 2007, Duane advanced in rank and became a PFS Full Instructor. In 2009, Duane received his Edged Weapons Instructorship from Sifu Paul Vunak, as well as a Brown Belt in Combat Sambo from Harvey Baker (UFS North Carolina). Duane recieved his Senior Instructorship from Paul Vunak on Dec. 11th 2011. He cites his influences from BJJ to include Pedro Carvalho, Prof. Fabio Santos, Todd Nathenson and Tim Peterson of the Lotus System.
