- "Martial arts is not just a means to be able to defend yourself and your loved ones; it is also a mechanism to improve every aspect of life."
Eddie Quan:
Biography:
Eddie Quan's interest in martial arts began in 1987 at the age of 13, when he studied Yang style Tai Chi Chuan. Later, when he enrolled at UCLA in 1991, his interest grew even more. Studying various traditional Chinese martial arts (Northern/Southern Shaolin, Tai Chi Chuan, Shuai Chiao, Fukienese, Wing Chun), he was also exposed to Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Capoeira. This exposure to other fighting methods helped him understand the magnitude of what martial arts is about, and that these systems had specific purposes. He competed at several martial arts tournaments in San Shou format and placed in each of the fights he entered. Although these were accomplishments in their own right, he felt compelled to discover the roots of combat and what works in real time application where the situation mutates.
It was then in 2004 when he decided to train under Sifu Paul Vunak. The training methods, teaching style, and explanation of the force continuum as taught by Sifu Paul were tangible, comprehensive, and most of all, made sense. He was granted a Phase One Instructorship that year. Again, this was a milestone in his personal growth, yet he knew this was only the start. When the opportunity came up to become a Certified Executive Instructor (CEI) of Executive PFS, he took full advantage. After training with a synergistic group of martial scientists (April, 2006), Eddie was now a CEI of Executive PFS. In December 2007, Eddie received his Law Enforcement Instructorship. After four years of constant research and training under the guidance of Sifu Vunak, Eddie received a Full Instructorship (October, 2008). In the Spring of 2009, Eddie received his Brown Belt in Combat Sambo as well as earning his Edged Weapons Instructorship. Even so, he understands that this is only a milestone and that there is even more to achieve. Drawing from his life experiences working in an intensive care unit, being a mentor for children in the social welfare system, and teaching inner city middle and high school students, he is able to communicate to an audience that is optimal for people with the sincere willingness to learn. Martial arts has always had a profound connection with him, yet has maintained an interest in a variety of things which include photography, teaching, music, biking, hiking, and fight choreography.
In September of 2010, Eddie has progressed his training to become a Senior Full Instructor in Progressive Fighting Systems- a rank that reminds him that he is "grateful to attain such a goal, which is a reminder that now the training is just starting!" As of this year, he has accepted to be an apprentice of Sifu Tom Cruse and learn from the cream of the crop of Jeet Kune Do instructors.
